SAP Super absorbent polymers

SAP Super absorbent polymers

Super absorbent polymers provide high water holding ability and absorb liquids of 50-300 times of its weight by remaining in a gel form.

SAP is mainly used in disposable hygiene products, such as baby diapers, sanitary napkins and adult protective underwear.

In most cases it is produced by polymerization of sodium acrylate blended with sodium hydroxide in the presence of an initiator to form a poly-acrylic acid sodium salt. By surface the products ability to hold liquids under pressure increases.

The final process steps in a SAP production line can be done with help of ANDRITZ Gouda equipment. In a two zone paddle dryer, the SAP is dried quickly before it is heated up to a specific temperature to perform a reaction. After a defined residence time, the product is discharged to a paddle cooler, which cools down the SAP before packaging. The plug flow properties of the ANDRITZ Gouda Paddle Dryer/Cooler ensure a narrow residence time distribution providing a uniform product.
